Taking a walk outside on a star-filled night can be a wonderful experience. It’s peaceful, quiet, and can be great for mental health, but what happens when going outside at night is dangerous? As women, we face discrimination and the risk of danger when being out alone after dark. This can prevent us from doing many things, including  something as simple and peaceful as a midnight stroll. However, there are ways to go out and still stay safe and protect yourself from danger at night.

Not going alone

The first and easiest way to stay safe is not to go alone. Take this as an opportunity to hang out with someone in your life, whether it’s a friend, family member, or partner. It is important to make sure it’s someone you trust and someone who you know will have your back if things go wrong. The more the merrier, so maybe make it a group activity or something that you and whoever you bring do weekly. It’s easy to get caught up in life, as busy as it gets, and forget to check in with the people in your life, so include them in your night walks if you don’t have time during the day. Most things are better when you’re not alone, so don’t be when you walk.

Things to remember

It’s also understandable if that late-night walk is the only alone time you get, and it’s your way of winding down. If you decide to go it alone, then there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, and most importantly, have a charged phone with you where you can quickly access it! If you are somewhere that is isolated and can’t scream for help, calling 911 is the perfect first step to getting help. Also, try your best not to get lost. It’s easier to contact help if they know exactly where you are. Make sure that you can relay your location to whoever you contact, whether that be the police or a loved one. If you are going to contact a loved one, make sure it’s someone you trust who is also close to your location, so they can get there faster.

Defending yourself

If it’s down to you defending yourself against an attacker, there are a few options to get yourself out. Firstly, wear shoes that are good for running, these are tennis shoes, not heels, ballet flats, or even some boots. Being able to outrun your attacker and get somewhere safe is a top priority. Second, self defense classes teach you how to keep yourself safe when you have nothing to defend yourself with. If you can’t afford classes, that’s OK! There are tutorials on YouTube that teach a few basic moves. Practice with a loved one and learning something, even if it’s small, is better than nothing.

Other ways to defend against an attacker is with items that you brought with you. Pepper spray is always the ideal option, aiming for the eyes. It blinds and incapacitates the attacker enough for you to get somewhere safe. Another option is taking your keys and making them into claws through your knuckles. This works well in a bind, but it can also hurt the inside of your hand and can be hard to aim. Alternatively, you can spike to hang on your key chain and use that as an individual weapon. Finally, there are alert whistles and alarms that can be added to a bag or key chain; use them to contact those around you for help. Even if no one comes over to help you, people  will either check on the odd sound or report it to the police. There will be a way out.

The right to a beautiful night

It is hard to live in a world where women feel unsafe to leave their homes, not just at night, because of the horror stories of fellow women. However, hope is never fully lost, and there are ways to feel and stay safe when being outside. We have every right to enjoy the night sky and all its beauty; we just need to stay safe when looking at it.

Most of us rarely consider the energy impact of our daily beauty routines. From blow-drying wet hair to styling with heated tools, these seemingly small habits add up to significant energy consumption over time. Making thoughtful, sustainable choices in your beauty regimen doesn’t just benefit the environment—it also translates to lower utility bills. By rethinking how we use common beauty tools and embracing more energy-conscious practices, we can substantially reduce our household energy footprint without sacrificing our personal care standards.

Understanding Energy Consumption in Beauty Routines

When it comes to energy use, not all beauty appliances are created equal. Hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners, and electric razors rank among the most power-hungry beauty tools in our arsenals. A typical hair dryer consumes between 1,500 and 2,000 watts of electricity, while straighteners and curling irons generally use between 60 and 150 watts. These numbers might seem modest at first glance, but with daily use, they quickly accumulate, potentially becoming a notable contributor to your monthly energy expenses.

Smart Strategies for Lowering Energy Use

Choosing Energy-Efficient Appliances

When it’s time to replace your beauty tools, prioritize models with energy-efficient features such as brushless motors, intelligent temperature control, and multiple heat settings. Recent innovations like ionic or tourmaline technology can dramatically cut drying time and energy requirements. If you’re in the market for a new hair dryer, look for models with advanced motor technology and smart heat management systems that maximize efficiency while minimizing wasted energy. Don’t overlook build quality, either—durable appliances last longer, reducing both waste and the energy footprint associated with manufacturing replacements.

Optimizing Your Daily Routine

Incorporate these practical energy-saving techniques into your beauty regimen:

  • Thoroughly towel-dry your hair before reaching for heat tools to significantly reduce appliance run time
  • Opt for lower heat settings whenever possible—they’re often just as effective while consuming less electricity
  • Keep appliance filters clean to maintain peak performance and efficiency
  • Try creating a simple routine checklist to monitor your energy-saving habits and spot opportunities for improvement

The Role of Proper Maintenance

Regular maintenance plays a crucial yet often overlooked role in energy efficiency. For instance, clearing lint and hair from dryer filters prevents airflow blockages, allowing your appliance to work more efficiently with less effort. Neglected maintenance not only drives up energy consumption but also shortens the lifespan of your beauty tools, leading to premature replacement and unnecessary resource use.

Real-World Examples and Case Studies

Take Emma’s experience as an example. After reassessing her beauty routine, she managed to cut her household energy consumption by 15%. Her approach was straightforward: switching to a more efficient hair dryer, taking extra time to towel-dry her hair thoroughly before styling, and implementing a strict “unplug when not in use” policy for all her beauty appliances.

Key Takeaway: Simple adjustments like thorough towel-drying before heat styling and selecting appropriate heat settings can slash energy use by up to 30% without compromising your final look.

Environmental and Personal Benefits

Cutting energy use in your beauty routine creates ripple effects that extend beyond your bathroom. Environmentally, you’re reducing your carbon footprint and easing demand on power grids. The personal advantages are equally compelling:

  • Noticeable savings on monthly electricity bills
  • Longer-lasting beauty appliances
  • Less exposure to electromagnetic fields
  • Reduced heat damage to hair and skin from avoiding excessive temperature settings

Conclusion

The small adjustments you make to your beauty routine today can yield meaningful energy savings over time. By taking a critical look at your current habits and appliances, you’re embarking on an important journey toward a more sustainable lifestyle. Remember that energy efficiency isn’t about compromise—it’s about making smarter choices that benefit both you and the planet. The cumulative impact of these mindful changes reaches far beyond your bathroom mirror, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone.

Yesterday, I was taking a walk around when I heard a bush singing. Curious, I walked around the bush and found a bird nest- with some baby mockingbirds! I leaned in to get a closer look when one of the birds fell out of the nest. It ran away from me, but I ultimately caught it. It tried to kick me with its claws and flap its wings when I took it back to the bush with the nest. I was trying to squeeze my hand through the bush and return it to the nest when I heard something flap above me- and in no time- its parents were diving into my hair! After I wrestled my hand with the baby bird into the nest, I backed away from the bush- and that baby bird fell out of the nest again. This time, I decided to leave it to the parents and went home to do some research.

Luckily, no one was harmed. I should’ve consulted Google before handling the birds. Here are some facts about baby birds so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.

The different stages of baby birds

Baby birds are born in spring or early summer. Many birds in North America nest in May. Nestlings are recently hatched. They are usually blind and have few feathers. The nestlings eventually grow in their feathers and become fledglings. Mockingbirds become fledglings at 12 days old. Fledglings usually leave the nest before learning to fly. The parents are watching nearby, so they can check on the fledgling and bring them food.

Bird parents can be super territorial!

I learned the hard way to not mess with bird families! Mockingbirds are territorial and aggressive during nesting season, so they will attack people who are too close to their nest. They have also attacked cats, dogs, and hawks. Songbirds might chase you or swoop around you to scare you away from the nest, but you’ll be fine if you back off. It’s a lot more dangerous and scary if you encounter a big bird species. Baby Canada geese look cute, but you don’t want to be near a Canadian Goose nesting site when the parents are around!

What to do if you find a baby bird

Most of the time, you should leave the bird alone. Most baby birds found on the ground are fledglings and their parents are taking care of them. If the fledgling is near somewhere dangerous like a road, it’s ok to move the bird to a nearby bush or somewhere safer. If the bird is a nestling, it should be returned to its nest. Nestlings can’t walk or run very far, so the nest should be nearby. The parents won’t abandon a baby bird if you touch it.

Yes, baby birds are super cute

I mean, just look at this. They look like little fluffy versions of their parents!

Just resist the urge to pet one when you see one.

If you want to learn more about birds, Cornell has a good website with bird ID and information:  https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search

You can also install a birdbath or a bird feeder to attract birds into your yard.

Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal in and out of the home. Outside plants are blooming, animals are coming out of hibernation, and exam season, unfortunately, is underway. With constant changes and schoolwork piling up, with exams sure to follow, to keep study spaces clean and organized. What better time to start cleaning up before the inevitable arrival of messy floors, its important cluttered desks, and sloppy closets than spring cleaning?

Many different cleaning techniques are popular, especially with social media and the rise of Cleantok on TikTok or ASMR cleaning videos on Instagram and YouTube. For people who have a hard time cleaning the internet is the place to go but with the different terms, methods, and rituals it can be overwhelming. So, here are some easy and effective ways to clean rooms step by step.

Gather Supplies: Before you do anything make sure you have everything that you may need. Meaning glass cleaner if a mirror as well as paper towels; trash bags for donations and trash; a duster, etc. These are all the basics but if anything else is necessary then you can easily get more later on.

Section Spaces: Choose a focus for you to start with. I like to start with my desk by clearing off everything – I mean clearing off everything on my desk entirely including the small trinkets and the devices. Afterward, you go in with surface cleaner and a duster to clear up the space. Once the space is clean, wipe down all of your trinkets and small things that go on your desk before putting them back in place. And congrats! You finished cleaning your first space.

Other Spaces – Closet: Clear out one section of clothing at a time: shirts, bottoms, jackets, tops, etc. After clearing them out look through them and ask a few questions:

  1. Will I wear this often?: If I don’t wear it often then I should donate it.
  2. Does this make me happy?: If I don’t like it then I should donate it.
  3. Does this fit me?: If not then donate it.

Other Spaces – Beds: Pull off the sheets and clean them in the laundry. After cleaning the sheets, pillowcases, and blankets, put them back.

Trash Can: Clear out the trash can in your room but do not use the small room trash can for putting out paper and other trash when cleaning. Instead, use a larger trash can.

Papers, Trash, Waste: Use a larger trash bag to put all of your waste within it. This will be easier when cleaning and you won’t have to constantly refill and replace your smaller trash can.

Afterwards: Vacuum your floors, wipe your mirrors, and dust your spaces to finish cleaning up the area.

It’s important to differentiate between a goal and a system when cleaning. Making a schedule of cleaning that you stick to is essential because it helps maintain clean spaces and turns into a system. Compare this to making a goal where your mentality turns into a one-and-done where you are less obligated to keep your spaces clean. You can keep your space clean and help lessen the load of messiness in your life. Moderation is key!

Coming of Age In Spirited Away

By Victoria Spear

Spirited Away” is not only celebrated as a classic and beautiful Japanese animated film but also for its profound lessons and meanings. From the cleansing of a polluted river spirit to the transformation of greedy parents into pigs, the film is rich with symbolism. At its core, the story follows Chihiro’s journey of growth and self-discovery. Throughout Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away,” Chihiro’s experiences illustrate her growth and transition through adolescence, leading to a more mature state of mind when she returns to her world. Through its symbols, character interactions, and challenges, the film portrays Chihiro’s coming-of-age journey.

One thing studio Ghibli films the visuals and symbols, as the facial expressions within characters can capture moments that convey meaning without having to say them explicitly. Arguably, one of the scenes in particular that comes is in regards to the red tunnel that the family goes into at the beginning of the film. The red tunnel can be symbolized as a transition through puberty and new beginnings. In the beginning, we can see Chihiros growing anxiety with having to move to a new area, not only that but a new school as well. She’s afraid of this new beginning and thus clings to her parents as much as possible for guidance.

Once Chihiro and her parents pass through the tunnel, there is a noticeable shift in their roles. Chihiro, who starts as a scared and uncertain child, becomes the voice of reason, warning her parents not to eat the food that doesn’t belong to them. Her refusal to indulge in the food symbolizes her rejection of greed and immaturity, distinguishing her from her parents, who succumb to their appetites and are transformed into pigs. This transformation represents the consequences of gluttony and selfishness, while Chihiro’s restraint marks the beginning of her journey towards maturity.

The bathhouse in “Spirited Away” also  serves as a crucial setting for Chihiro’s transformation and growth. Upon entering the bathhouse, Chihiro is initially overwhelmed by its unfamiliarity and the various spirits she encounters. However, as she begins working there, she undergoes a process of purification and renewal. The bathhouse itself is a place where spirits come to cleanse themselves, and this symbolism extends to Chihiro’s journey. One pivotal moment to highlight  is Chihiro’s encounter with the polluted river spirit. Initially mistaken for a “stink spirit,” the river spirit is covered in filth and pollution. Chihiro bravely takes on the task of cleaning it, and in doing so, she not only reveals the true nature of the spirit but also undergoes a symbolic cleansing herself. As she pulls out the debris and pollution, the river spirit emerges clean and renewed, and in gratitude, it holds her up and envelops her in warm water. This act can be seen as a baptism of sorts, symbolizing Chihiro’s own purification and rebirth.

The river spirit’s cleansing parallels Chihiro’s internal transformation. By helping the spirit, Chihiro sheds her own fears and insecurities, embracing a sense of responsibility and compassion. The warm water that envelops her represents a safe and nurturing space, allowing her to emerge stronger and more confident. This moment signifies a new beginning for Chihiro, as she starts to fully rid herself of past mistakes and childish fears. Throughout her time in the bathhouse, Chihiro faces numerous challenges that test her courage and resilience. She learns to navigate the complex social dynamics of the spirit world, makes alliances with characters like Haku and Lin, and overcomes obstacles with determination and empathy. Her interactions with figures such as Yubaba and No-Face further highlight her growing maturity. Despite the dangers and uncertainties she faces, Chihiro consistently shows compassion and a willingness to help others, even when it puts her at risk.

By the end of the film, Chihiro’s transformation is complete. As she and her parents return through the tunnel, Chihiro no longer looks back with uncertainty. Her experiences in the spirit world have instilled in her a newfound confidence and self-assurance. Haku’s parting words and the knowledge that she has saved her parents and herself reinforce her growth. She emerges from the tunnel not as the scared girl who entered, but as a more mature and self-assured individual, ready to face the challenges of her own world. The tunnel is no longer read either, its covered with new flora and fauna showing that each leaf and vine was formed through each decision and action she made. This transition is a powerful symbol of her coming of age, illustrating the film’s overarching theme of growth and the journey from childhood to maturity.

Another significant influence on Chihiro’s growth is her interactions with other characters, particularly her bond with Haku. When Chihiro first encounters Haku, he immediately provides comfort and guidance in her frightening situation. Haku directs her to Kamaji, who acts as a father figure to the other two young workers, and ensures that she is well taken care of within the bathhouse. He arranges for her to get a job, allowing her to stay and form a plan to rescue herself and her parents.Throughout the film, Chihiro often turns to Haku for support. One notable instance is when he takes her to the stalls where her parents, now transformed into pigs, are being held. Overwhelmed by her circumstances, Chihiro breaks down, but Haku offers her food and reassures her with a gentle promise to help. This supportive relationship contrasts sharply with the negligence her parents showed at the beginning of the film, highlighting the positive impact of a healthy support system on her growth.

Haku’s influence on Chihiro becomes evident in her actions later in the film. When Haku falls into trouble with Yubaba, the main antagonist representing the challenges Chihiro must overcome, Chihiro steps in to save him. Haku is punished by Yubaba’s twin sister, Zeniba, for stealing from her, and Chihiro’s loyalty to him drives her to take action. Her willingness to embark on a dangerous journey to Zeniba’s cottage demonstrates her courage and the deep friendship between her and Haku.

Chihiro’s relationship with Haku helps her gain confidence and develop a sense of responsibility. She transitions from a fearful girl into someone who is willing to face any challenge to help her friends and family. Her determination to save Haku, despite the risks involved, shows how much she has grown. This transformation is further highlighted when she helps Haku remember his true identity as a river spirit, revealing that he saved her from drowning in his river before it was paved over. Chihiro’s bond with Haku has significantly influenced her character. She has learned to make decisions with confidence and resolve, facing her problems head-on. Haku’s steadfast support and the loyalty they share have been crucial in Chihiro’s journey from fear and uncertainty to maturity and self-assurance. This growth is a testament to the power of strong, supportive relationships in overcoming adversity and finding one’s true self.

In retrospect, Haku isn’t the only one aiding Chihiro’s growth; No-Face also plays a significant role. Initially, No-Face’s character is difficult to understand, shrouded in mystery. The spirit’s close connection with Chihiro throughout the film can be interpreted in various ways. One theory is that No-Face acts as a mirror to Chihiro’s former self. The spirit’s interactions with Chihiro on a desperate level reflect how she tried to connect with her parents. As a child relies on their parents for nearly everything and seeks their attention, Chihiro’s initial behavior mirrors this dependence. Similarly, No-Face exhibits childlike tendencies, lashing out when things don’t go his way. Chihiro’s interactions with No-Face demonstrate her growth as she nurtures the spirit. She invites him into the bathhouse, thanks him for his kindness, and gently rejects his unwanted offerings. This mirrors a parental role, balancing gentleness with firm decisions for the best outcome.

The conflict between Chihiro and No-Face further highlights her development. When Chihiro gives No-Face medicine to purge the ‘evil’ from his body, he lashes out in pain, not understanding that it’s for his own good. It reminds you of a child, lashing out in confusion and fear, The girl doesn’t grow angry with him either; she simply runs away until the male calms down. Chihiro’s insistence on helping No-Face despite his reaction shows her growing maturity and compassion. She even takes No-Face with her to visit Zeniba, recognizing that the bathhouse environment is not beneficial for him, saying it wasn’t “good for him.” This dynamic illustrates Chihiro’s evolving character. She learns to care for others, understand their needs, and make decisions for their well-being. By nurturing No-Face, Chihiro displays a level of empathy and responsibility that marks her transformation from a dependent child to a caring and mature or even maternal individual. This relationship, alongside her bond with Haku, underscores her journey towards self-discovery and growth throughout the film.

In conclusion, Spirited Away masterfully portrays Chihiro’s growth through various elements, from the symbolism of cleansing to her personal transformation and the meaningful relationships she forms along the way. The film encapsulates the essence of adolescence as a journey filled with adventure and self-discovery. Chihiro’s experiences illustrate the transition from childhood to maturity, showing her ability to stand on her own. This film resonates with many because it is both comforting and motivating, offering profound lessons about growth through the eyes of a ten-year-old navigating a new world. In the process, she not only transforms herself for the better but also positively impacts those around her. The beautifully crafted narrative and rich symbolism Hayao Miyazaki conveys through “Spirited Away” connected a timeless exploration of the challenges and triumphs of growing up.

The Dual Nature of Fashion: Self-Expression and Environmental Impact

Written by Joy Wright

Fashion plays a huge role in modern society, serving as a means for self-expression and reflecting individual and collective values. Defined by Oxford Languages as “a popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior,” fashion goes beyond aesthetics. It is a powerful voice for conveying messages, telling stories, and advocating for causes. For example, clothing with phrases like “Black Lives Matter” or “I Can’t Breathe” highlights important social justice issues, showcasing how fashion can be a form of activism. Additionally, merchandise featuring popular culture icons, such as artists or franchises like Marvel and Harry Potter, allows individuals to express their opinions and support specific figures or ideas.

However, while fashion serves as a safe space for artistic expression and representing oneself, it also causes significant environmental consequences. According to Earth.org, “the fashion industry is notorious for depleting water sources and polluting waterways, with an alarming 85% of all textiles ending up in landfills each year.” Also stated by climateseed.com, “the industry is responsible for approximately 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing the emissions produced by all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Furthermore, the fashion industry contributes to 35% of the plastic microfibers released into oceans and accounts for 20% of industrial water pollution.” These horrible facts show why there is such an urgent need to address the negative environmental impact of fashion.  Individuals should have the right to express themselves through their clothing without harming the environment.

The environment already faces several threats, including pollution, deforestation, food waste, and habitat destruction. The least a person can do is take the time to learn how they can reduce these issues and help the environment, starting with the clothes they wear. To understand these negative problems that arose when fashion became a huge factor in the economy, how fashion is harming the environment must be revealed, and how people can stop these problems from arising further. One of the biggest parts of the fashion industry that is harming the environment is fast fashion. Fast fashion is defined as “inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends.” Common brands such as H&M, Forever 21, and Zara are examples of fast fashion, leading to significant environmental degradation all because of their high production rates and low costs.

According to earth.org, “the fast fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions – more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. “As one can imagine, this isn’t good. Fast fashion is harming the environment by using up water sources and creating more pollution for the earth’s air.  To combat these harmful effects of fast fashion, people must reconsider their values and explore more sustainable options. A very good alternative is the slow fashion movement. The slow fashion movement advocates for environmental and social justice. Slow fashion emphasizes mindfulness in the design, production, consumption, and overall approach to clothing. It encourages people to be more aware of how their purchases affect different workers, communities, and ecosystems. Unlike fast fashion, which prioritizes profit over sustainability, slow fashion is rooted in eco-friendly practices, utilizing materials such as organic cotton, linen, wool, recycled materials, and sustainable silk. Brands like Sezane, Stella McCartney, Omnes, Asket, Nynne, and Sheep Inc. are examples of the commitment to sustainability without sacrificing style.

Beyond embracing slow fashion, individuals can further minimize their impact on the environment through practices such as sewing their clothes, repurposing old garments, or purchasing second-hand items. These alternatives promote creativity and sustainability, reinforcing the idea that fashion can be both stylish and eco-conscious. In conclusion, while fashion serves as a vital form of self-expression, storytelling, and advocacy for important societal causes, it is essential to acknowledge its detrimental environmental effects.  By educating people, being open to change, and embracing alternatives like slow fashion, people can enjoy the benefits of fashion while actively contributing to the well-being of the environment. It is humans’ responsibility to protect the earth and ensure its sustainability for future generations, demonstrating that fashion can be both meaningful and mindful.

It doesn’t snow often where I live, so it was super hype when we had a blizzard last week. It looked unreal when everything was white outside. But what exactly is snow and how does it form?

What is Snow?

Snow is frozen water, but it’s more than just ice. Snow forms when the temperature of the air is low enough for water vapor in the atmosphere to freeze. This process typically occurs when the temperature is below 0°C (32°F), although snow can form at temperatures slightly above freezing if conditions are right.

How does snow form?

Snowflakes form in the atmosphere where water vapor exists as a gas. When the temperature drops, the water vapor condenses into tiny water droplets. As these droplets freeze, they form ice crystals. These crystals start to grow by attracting more water vapor, which freezes directly onto the existing crystal.

Snowflakes are hexagonal because water molecules (H₂O) have a bent, angular shape. As these water molecules stick together in a specific, repeating arrangement, they form the six-sided symmetry that defines snowflakes. The pattern of ice crystal growth depends on the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. In fact, no two snowflakes are exactly alike because each one forms under slightly different conditions, leading to unique shapes and structures.

Temperature:

Colder temperatures typically result in simpler, more symmetrical snowflakes, while warmer temperatures lead to larger, more complex structures. At temperatures near freezing (around 0°C or 32°F), snowflakes tend to be larger, with more intricate branches and more complex designs. At lower temperatures (around -10°C to -20°C or 14°F to -4°F), snowflakes are smaller, often forming simpler, plate-like or columnar structures.

Humidity:

Humidity, or the amount of moisture in the air, also plays a key role in snowflake formation. High humidity leads to larger snowflakes with more intricate features, while low humidity results in smaller, more compact crystals.

How Snow Falls

As snowflakes fall from the clouds, they are carried by wind currents, which can cause them to drift and shift, leading to the formation of snow drifts on the ground. The size of the snowflakes and their fall speed depend on the surrounding air conditions. Larger, heavier snowflakes fall more quickly, while smaller flakes float gently to the ground. As snowflakes accumulate on the ground, they form layers, and over time, the snow can compress into more solid forms like snowpack, which can be several feet deep.

The Importance of Snow in Earth’s Climate System

Snow plays a crucial role in Earth’s climate system. Snow-covered surfaces reflect a large portion of sunlight into space, a phenomenon known as the “albedo effect.” This helps regulate the Earth’s temperature by preventing excessive heating. Snow also acts as an insulating blanket for the ground beneath, protecting soil and plants from extremely cold temperatures during the winter months.

Snow also contributes to the water cycle. As snow accumulates and melts in the spring, it replenishes rivers, lakes, and groundwater supplies, particularly in areas with cold winters. In this way, snow is vital to maintaining water resources for ecosystems and human consumption.

The next time you play in the snow, appreciate the science. Every snowflake is a reminder of nature’s beauty.

Whispers of the Seasons

Golden leaves, soft skies of gray,
Autumn winds steal warmth away.
Fires glow as chill drifts near,
Slowly cold fills every year.

Sweaters hug against the breeze,
Crackling fires through autumn trees.
Golden hours fade to night,
Stars shine clear, so cold and bright.

Then winter lays a silver sheet,
Snowfall pillows at our feet.
Quiet skies and branches bare,
Frosted breath in winter’s air.

Hair Dryer Brush9.5/10

As someone who does not have the time, energy, or expertise to style my hair, this has been my holy grail. I purchased the Revlon Pro Collection Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer and have used it every day since. It gives the voluminous look of rollers while saving you the time and uncomfortable wear. I also like to use it when my hair is in need of a wash day, because it gives it some much needed volume!

Heatless Curl Set8/10

Another hair tool that saves time and energy, except this one also saves you the heat damage! Normal hot curling tools severely damage hair over time and are seriously inconvenient in the morning. Heatless curls, however, are efficient, can be slept in, and are thus easily accessible in satin.

I personally use the Kitsch Satin Heatless Curling Set, which includes two satin scrunchies to hold my hair in place, although I do use a claw clip to hold the rod in place when I initially begin wrapping my hair. The process does initially take a while to master, but after a while becomes a great alternative!

Shaving Oil – 7.5/10

In a world where it feels like the most efficient shaving tools are made for men, a good women’s shaving product is worth talking about. After purchasing shaving oil for the first time, I can definitely say I do not see myself ever going back to any other method.

I spontaneously purchased the Tree Hut Moisturizing Shave Oil while it was on sale; I avoid paying full price in case it was not effective, but now I have no problem continuing to purchase it, because this is definitely worth it! (Keep in mind that body hair is normal and removing it is completely optional, so do not feel pressured to do so!)

Owala Water Bottle – 10/10

Even though it’s simple, this water bottle has possibly been one of my favorite purchases of all time. Featuring a lid that allows you to either drink out of a straw or turn it up to drink it, and a design that fits into a cup holder, it ensures that you enjoy the most convenient and efficient water drinking experience.

The double lock allows you not to worry about it spilling, plus, it doubles as a handle which makes it easy to carry around no matter what else you have in your hands.

P.S. the variety of color combinations and only add to the fun!

Fast fashion has revolutionized how we consume clothing, offering the latest trends at affordable prices. However, behind the appealing storefronts and glossy advertisements lies a dark reality: the significant environmental waste generated by this industry. From overproduction to discarded garments, the waste associated with fast fashion is immense and unsustainable. Understanding the true cost of our cheap and trendy clothes is essential for making more responsible choices.

The Rise of Fast Fashion

Fast fashion brands like Zara, H&M, and Forever 21 have built their empires on the premise of delivering the latest styles quickly and affordably. By shortening the fashion cycle, they encourage consumers to buy more frequently, creating a culture of disposing of clothes and constantly consuming them. While this business model has made fashion more accessible, it has also led to a staggering amount of waste.

Overproduction and Excess Inventory

Overproduction is one of the most significant contributors to waste in the fast fashion industry. To keep up with the demand for constant newness, brands often produce far more clothing than can be sold. Unsold inventory, sometimes as much as 30% of what is produced, often ends up in landfills or incinerators. This not only wastes the resources used in production, such as water, energy, and raw materials, but also generates harmful emissions.

The Environmental Impact of Disposal

When fast fashion garments are discarded, they don’t simply disappear. Most textiles are made from synthetic fibers like polyester, which can take hundreds of years to decompose. In landfills, these materials release methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as they break down. Incineration, another common disposal method, releases toxic chemicals and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, further contributing to environmental pollution.

Microplastics and Water Pollution

Many fast fashion garments are made from synthetic fibers, which shed microplastics during washing. These tiny plastic particles make their way into our waterways, eventually reaching the oceans. Microplastics are ingested by marine life, entering the food chain and posing a threat to both wildlife and human health. The widespread use of synthetic fibers in fast fashion thus has a far-reaching impact on our ecosystems.

The Human Cost of Waste

The waste generated by fast fashion also has a significant human cost. In many developing countries, where much of the world’s clothing is produced, waste management infrastructure is often inadequate. This leads to the accumulation of textile waste in local communities, causing health and environmental issues. Workers in the fast fashion supply chain often bear the brunt of these consequences, with limited access to clean water and safe living conditions.

Moving Towards Sustainable Fashion

Addressing the waste problem in fast fashion requires a collective effort from both the consumers and the brands, but here are a few steps we can take to help ensure our choices lead to more ethical standards:

  1. Buy less, choose well: Focus on purchasing fewer, high-quality items that are made to last. This reduces the frequency of buying new clothes and contributes to less waste.
  2. Support Sustainable Brands: Buy from brands that prioritize sustainable and ethical practices. Look for certifications such as Fair Trade, B Corp, and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
  3. Thrift and Vintage Shopping: Buying second-hand clothing through “thrifting” is a current trend moving around social media. Many people buy vintage jackets, t-shirts, and baggy jeans which look good and give an artistic and trendy look when it comes to fashion trends.
  4. Wash Less and Care More: Washing clothes less frequently and at lower temperatures can prolong their lifespan. Use gentle detergents and avoid tumble drying when possible. This can help ensure that we keep our clothes for a longer time instead of throwing them away just a few weeks after purchase.

The waste generated by fast fashion is a pressing environmental issue that cannot be ignored. By understanding the true cost of our clothing choices and taking steps towards more sustainable practices, we can help reduce the waste burden on our planet. Every garment we choose to buy, wear, and discard has an impact, and collectively, we have the power to transform the fashion industry into a force for good. Let’s move towards a future where fashion is not only stylish but also sustainable.
