Over winter break, I cleared my browsing history and was SHOCKED to see how much time I blew on Instagram or YouTube. So while it felt like I spent hours writing college essays, most of the time was surfing the web “for inspiration.” Once all of my essays were in, I decided to get a head start on my New Year’s resolution: To create more, consume less. After all, I was graduating this year and wanted to study to live instead of living to study.

Although I stayed at home and it felt like I did practically nothing, I picked up a few new skills and felt more fulfilled than ever before.

Here are some of the things I tried:

1. Reading

I had lots of books lying around at home that I hadn’t looked into. Currently, I’m in a nonfiction phase where I have the patience for good science writing and nothing else. I found Ways of Being by James Brindle and X+Y by Eugenia Cheng to be insightful. A few pages a day when there’s time to spare really compounds.

2. Coding

I will study computer science in college, so I refreshed my coding skills. If you don’t know how to code, W3Schools tutorials are a great place to start. I personally think that although AI can do low-level coding, it is still important to understand the logic behind programs.

3. Baking cookies

This was my first time baking without the help of my parents. I followed a Preppy Kitchen recipe. My snickerdoodles had too much flour in them so they were spherical, but they still tasted good. It felt nice knowing I won’t starve in college since I could follow a recipe.

4. Art

I haven’t drawn on paper in a long time, so I revived my creative muscles by sketching faces at various angles. Then I tackled a digital portrait on my iPad. It’s been a while, so I really needed to review how to shade and make my colors cooperate to convey value and form.

5. Origami

I especially love making 3D geometric shapes with modular origami. I could cut out 30 squares, fold them into units, and build a dodecahedron while watching a movie. It is very relaxing and rewarding to finish a polyhedron.

6. Physics

I was getting scared about AP Physics C Electricity and Magnetism, so I watched YouTube tutorials about electric fields and solving for voltage, current, and resistance in circuits. I hope that effort I put into physics now will pay off when it’s crunch time in April.

7. Starting a tutoring business

I’ve been teaching math with a company for a while, but I wanted to learn how to manage my own finances (and have emergency money for college). On New Year’s Day, I posted an ad into the city Facebook group and gained a client. I’m having my first sessions soon, so I’m excited so see how this goes!

Hopefully, my creative experiments will inspire you to try new things and dream big this year. Happy 2026!

In today’s world that values independence and financial empowerment, investing in a first home is more than a milestone—it’s a transformative move. For young women carving out their identities and building careers, homeownership offers stability, personal freedom, and a foundation for long-term wealth.

In places like Vermont, where community and opportunity align, securing a home enhances both financial and emotional well-being. With more women leading, challenging norms, and taking control of their futures, owning a home has become a powerful, strategic step toward lasting self-sufficiency.

It’s a decision that fosters pride, resilience, and a deeper connection to one’s goals. In every sense, a home of one’s own is a statement of intent and independence.

Building Financial Security Through Smart Lending Tools

One of the most compelling aspects of homeownership is the opportunity it offers for long-term wealth creation. Unlike rent payments that yield no return, mortgage payments gradually build equity—an asset that can be leveraged for future financial moves. Understanding and utilizing lending tools wisely can make a significant difference in a young woman’s ability to make the most of her investment.

A common tool that helps homeowners tap into the value of their property is a home equity loan. These loans allow individuals to borrow against the equity they’ve built, often at lower interest rates compared to personal loans or credit cards. For those who have begun to establish a stable financial base, this form of lending can be a powerful resource for funding important life goals such as home improvements, consolidating debt, or even investing further in one’s education or business ventures. In such scenarios, comparing financial products becomes crucial.

For example, evaluating home equity loan rates in Vermont provides insight into how borrowing terms can differ based on location and lender policies. Careful comparison ensures that a loan aligns with one’s financial strategy without compromising long-term goals.

Personal Empowerment Through Ownership

Beyond finances, owning a home is a bold declaration of self-reliance. For young women, in particular, this step fosters a sense of control over their environment and lifestyle. Renters are often subject to lease limitations, unexpected rent increases, or even forced moves due to property sales. In contrast, owning a home brings a new level of autonomy—decisions about décor, renovations, or even pet ownership no longer require external approvals. Homeowners are free to change and upgrade their space as they please. If they want to install an underfloor heating system, for example, all they have to do contact a specialist online or visit them in person and get the project underway – no authorizations required.

Moreover, this autonomy fosters a deeper connection to one’s space. Homeowners tend to invest more emotionally and practically in their property, turning it into a reflection of their values, creativity, and aspirations. For many, this means curating a peaceful retreat from a hectic world or designing a layout that supports remote work, hobbies, and personal wellness.

Ownership can also enhance one’s sense of safety and rootedness. Establishing roots in a community brings with it a sense of belonging and stability. This psychological comfort can ripple into other areas of life, such as improved mental health, stronger community ties, and increased motivation to set and achieve future goals.

A Long-Term Investment in Stability

From a financial perspective, real estate has consistently proven to be a reliable long-term investment. While markets fluctuate, property values tend to appreciate over time. For young women looking to build lasting wealth, homeownership is one of the few investments that provide both a place to live and a path to economic growth. To protect this valuable investment and plan confidently for the future, many first-time homeowners explore house insurance options to ensure their home is well-covered and fits their long-term goals.

Monthly mortgage payments contribute directly to ownership rather than simply paying a landlord. Over time, these payments increase personal net worth. In addition, owning a home may provide tax advantages depending on the prevailing laws, such as deductions for mortgage interest and property taxes. These benefits can add up significantly, making ownership even more attractive when compared to the never-ending costs of renting.

Furthermore, owning a home offers protection against inflation. While rent prices often rise with inflation, a fixed-rate mortgage remains constant over time. This means that the relative cost of housing actually decreases as the homeowner’s income potentially grows, resulting in more disposable income and greater financial freedom in the future.

Positioning for the Future

Investing in a first home also lays the foundation for future life decisions. Whether the goal is to start a family, establish a home-based business, or transition to a flexible lifestyle, having a permanent residence makes long-term planning easier. It becomes a secure base from which to launch new ventures or weather unexpected life changes.

Additionally, owning property can enhance creditworthiness. A history of timely mortgage payments demonstrates financial reliability, opening doors to better rates on future loans, investments, or credit cards. This financial credibility plays a key role in a broader economic strategy that includes diversification, risk management, and legacy building.

Another future-facing benefit is the possibility of passive income. If career paths change or relocation becomes necessary, converting a home into a rental property can generate income without giving up the investment. Many young homeowners eventually transition into landlords, creating new revenue streams and expanding their financial portfolios.

Redefining Success on One’s Own Terms

Perhaps the most empowering aspect of homeownership for young women is the ability to define success independently. In generations past, buying a home often coincided with marriage or starting a family. Today, those norms are shifting. More women are choosing to prioritize career goals, travel, or personal growth before—or even instead of—traditional milestones. Owning a home is no longer tied to anyone else’s timeline or expectations.

This shift is monumental. It reflects a broader cultural transformation in which women are taking control of their narratives. A home becomes a symbol of this independence—a base from which dreams can be pursued, failures recovered, and achievements celebrated. Whether it’s hosting friends, caring for loved ones, or simply enjoying solitude, every corner of the home becomes part of a larger story of self-actualization.

Buying a first home is far more than a financial transaction—it is an investment in self-worth, resilience, and long-term stability. For young women, it marks a meaningful turning point, offering both immediate and lasting benefits. From building equity and leveraging home lending tools to establishing independence and paving the way for future success, homeownership is a decisive step toward personal empowerment.

If you’re anything like me, you love the new year. You love setting goals, you love regaining peace of mind, and you love starting fresh. However, if you’re anything like me- a busy high school student with endless tasks to complete- sometimes those goals seem to get lost on you. If you’re anything like me, the end of December can make you feel like you’re back where you started. And if y0u’re anything like me, you want to change that.

Tips for Making New Years Matter

1. Examine your goals. How are they worded? Why are they your goals?

I often find that goals (even my own!) are superficial in nature. Things like “losing weight”, or “reading more books” are unspecific, and they often lack meaning. Ask yourself WHY you want to make a change. If you aren’t truly going to be fulfilled by making changes, the changes won’t happen.

2. Make a Plan

One comment I get fairly often is that I’m “the most type A person” my friends have ever met, and I see that as my super power. Buy a cute planner and specifically devise a plan to accomplish your resolutions. Set “mini-goals” or checkpoints every few weeks, make a schedule, and WRITE! IT! DOWN! Neuroscientists have said that writing goals down makes them 42% more likely to happen, and that’s not a coincidence.

3. Use Accountability Partners

Discipline is hard to practice, and it’s even harder to build. Discipline can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! Spend New Years Eve eating yummy food and hanging out with friends, and set goals while you do so. Make a plan, and rely on each other to stick to it! When I get texts from friends asking me if I’ve had my water amount or finished my book club book, I feel healthy pressure to complete it, and knowing those questions are coming motivates me to stick with my resolutions. Not to mention, everything is more fun with friends!

4. Adjust, Adjust, Adjust!

I am great at overestimating myself. I feel unstoppable with my surplus of free time over holiday break and have a tendency to be slightly unrealistic with my resolution setting. When school starts back sometimes I feel as though my goals are unattainable, and that has pushed me away from them in the past. Adjusting as you go -adding more or reducing your load- can be a powerful skill. Less is better than none, and quite frankly, if you feel like what you’re doing is too much, reduction can be healthier than pushing forward. Don’t be afraid to take a step back at times. Recognizing your needs is a strength, not a weakness.

Wishing 2026 brings you happiness, good health, and healthy habits!

nd sOne quick Google search of the term it girl will generate millions of research papers, videos, and articles about who today’s it girls are and how to become one. From clothes to hobbies to even mannerisms, there seems to be a never-ending list of what girls and young women must do to become the girl whom everyone else either loves or hates to love. To understand the individual and cultural impacts of the it girl syndrome, it is important to understand the basic principles of what exactly an it girl is, how to become one, and what these standards for girls and young women reveal about society.

What an It Girl is

To start off, an it girl is defined by Wikipedia as “an attractive, well-known young woman who is perceived to have both sex appeal and a personality that is especially engaging”  [1]. Today, the term is used to refer to beautiful women who appear to be the closest thing a person can get to perfection: style, intelligence, independence, and confidence. Essentially, an it girl is a girl who has it all.
However, it is important to know the difference between a popular girl and an it girl. Popularity has seemed to exist since the beginning of time. There have always been those who, for some reason or another, seem to know everyone—those who get invited to all the parties. It girls, however, are the girls who everyone knows, the ones who host all the parties. It girls are not known for impressive skill or memorable traits like popular girls, but rather are defined by their entire being. Popular girls come and go, but it girls ingrained their existence into an entire culture.

The Modern It Girl

So, the question on millions of girls’ minds: what does it take to become an it girl today? Well, it is actually quite simple to become one. All you need is access to money, incredible intelligence, impossible beauty, and always have unwavering confidence. An it girl doesn’t have to worry about the cost of spoiling herself with luxurious clothes, bags, and perfumes. She holds the “right” opinions on social issues and is disgustingly knowledgeable in every subject from literature to science.
Somehow she looks both youthful and mature; she doesn’t need makeup or filters to look like the girls in magazines. She has issues and is therefore relatable, but never do her issues actually affect her. Every guy wants to date her, but she has only a “tasteful” dating history. And above all, she maintains every one of these standards effortlessly and constantly. One is either an it girl or she isn’t—remember, there is no such thing as halfway perfect.

Social Medias Influence

As social media influence rises, so does the pressure to embody this perfection. Society is notorious for imposing unrealistic expectations on girls and young women, but now these standards have become a must rather than a bonus. Social media allows and encourages everyone to watch everyone else at all times, and through likes, views, and follows. This creates the demand for girls to constantly have an entertaining, aesthetically pleasing life to display. Girls are particularly vulnerable to these demands as society holds them to a much higher standard of appearance, relationships, likability,  and their actions.
Another cruelty of this era of social media is the fact that this standard is enforced on nearly everyone. Social media has given this generation the illusion that everyone else has everything, and if you don’t, you are somehow behind. It is not enough to not have social media, as these expectations follow girls through modern books, shows, peer groups, and pop culture. The It Girl replaces passing trends with a modern blueprint for belonging.
Of course, social media harms young people in countless ways. But what is specifically damaging about the pressure to be an it girl is the fact that it is an impossible task. Girls are chasing a vision shaped by corporations that profit from their  insecurities: beauty brands, wellness companies, influencers, and algorithm-driven platforms. The more unattainable the ideal, the more girls will invest and the more these corporations make. When girls inevitably fail to meet these standards, it only deepens the mental health crisis today by generating further insecurity, anxiety, and depression. The it girl standard is not problematic solely because it is impossible; it is problematic because it has created the illusion that it is entirely possible.

Where We Go From Here

The it girl trend began nearly a century ago and is once again trapping girls in unrealistic standards for every part of their lives, and through constant visibility, these standards have seeped into nearly every waking moment. But this situation is not indefinite. I would like to emphasize that this is not to say that social media is all bad. Social media has the potential and currently has many positive aspects on girls’ lives. The answer is not to abandon social media entirely, but to rethink who gets to define the it girl. Girls must build a collective movement that redefines the iconic. This does not mean rejecting beauty, confidence, or the desire to feel special, but rather rejecting the idea of perfection.
There is nothing more iconic than someone who is emphatic, compassionate, genuine, and resilient. Create a standard that does not create envy but fosters inspiration. In re-imagining the it girl as someone who uplifts others, we will create a more positive world for girls that will benefit not only individuals but entire communities.

Girl Stretching

Do you make a New Year’s resolution each January 1st and find that it’s long forgotten by the time February arrives? If so, you’re definitely not alone. For most people, making a New Year’s resolution is like setting yourself up to fail. Figuring out how to make resolutions that actually stick can be a challenge. So, if you’re serious about making a change, it’s best to look for alternative ways to do it.

Setting an intention to make health your focus in 2026 is an excellent goal to set. Rather than putting pressure on yourself to have reached a certain weight by the end of the year or setting unrealistic fitness goals, focusing on your health is much more realistic. Setting the intention to make positive changes in your life, rather than focusing on a fixed outcome, can be a healthier way to approach the new year. The new year may be a fresh start, but it’s only a date. Every single new minute, hour, and day is a chance to make a fresh start.

Let Go of Perfection, and Focus on Building Habits

Making positive changes in your life isn’t about seeking perfection. It’s the setting of unrealistic goals that make people give up on their resolutions. This is because even the slightest ‘slip-up’ makes them feel like they have failed. Setting the intention that you will be making your health a priority enables you to make choices each day that support this, and they will eventually become habits

Make Positive Changes to Your Eating Habits

Many people start the new year by restricting their calorie intake to try and help them lose weight fast. Others are tempted by quick-fix solutions, such as weight loss injections. These can deliver results, but they are unlikely to help you achieve the results you’re looking for in the longer term. Instead, it’s helpful to look for weight loss solutions that work naturally to reset your metabolism as this is more likely to help you achieve lasting changes without unhealthy quick-fix solutions.

Make Fitness a Part of Your Routine

Pushing yourself hard at the gym and exercising excessively can seem like a good way to see fast results from your fitness efforts. Unfortunately, pushing yourself too hard and overexercising is more likely to cause you an injury and leave you feeling exhausted.

When you’re focusing on your health rather than achieving the body of a swimwear model, you can start to introduce small habits that all add up to a much bigger and lasting change. Trying to be active in your daily life whn you’re going about your business, is a helpful way to do this. For example, walking or cycling more, or taking fitness classes with your friends, are easy ways to be more active every day.

Leaving quick-fix solutions in 2025 are great ways to make 2026 your year of health. Your progress doesn’t need to be fast, just make healthy habits your intention and be consistent, and you’ll see results.

The Importance of Education

“A child without education is like a bird without wings.” – Tibetan Proverb

A successful future depends on strong education. Without knowledge, people limit themselves and cannot take advantage of opportunities. For example, careers in health, finance, and services all require study and training. As a result, learning provides a foundation that improves employment opportunities and living conditions for both individuals and their communities.

Education as Empowerment

Learning is also a source of empowerment. It fosters critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration—skills needed for both personal and professional growth. Moreover, the Right to Education organization emphasizes that education develops human potential, ensures dignity, and promotes well-being. In addition, educated individuals gain awareness of their rights and civic responsibilities, helping them protect themselves and contribute to society.

Building Skills and Confidence

Education further strengthens confidence and self-determination. Knowledge of science, math, history, and literature equips people to direct their own lives. In the same way, financial literacy enables them to manage money wisely, while health and nutrition knowledge helps families make better lifestyle choices. For instance, the World Bank (2018) found that each additional year of education increases personal earnings by about 10 percent.

Education as a Social Equalizer

Beyond personal growth, education acts as a powerful social equalizer. It allows individuals to rise above the limits of birth and background. In disadvantaged areas, access to learning can break the cycle of poverty by opening paths to employment and community involvement. Furthermore, educated citizens are better equipped to make political decisions that benefit society as a whole.

Fostering Empathy and Global Awareness

Education also builds empathy and global awareness. Through exposure to diverse perspectives in literature, social sciences, and cultural studies, people gain tolerance and understanding. These qualities are crucial today, since global challenges require collaboration across borders and cultures. Therefore, education not only helps individuals survive but also enables humanity to advance.

The Path to a Better Future

Ultimately, education is the cornerstone of progress. It provides knowledge, develops essential life skills, and empowers people to create lasting change. As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Investing in education benefits not only individuals but also entire societies, paving the way for equality, peace, and prosperity.

You’ve made it through those grueling middle school years that every movie, book, and every person you know warned you about. So now what? High school is a very different experience than middle school. There’s more homework, more teachers to get to know, but most importantly, more freedom and more fun!

As an upcoming senior who has grown a lot over the last few years, here are the essential tips for surviving and thriving in your first year of high school to help you have the best high school experience!

  1. Don’t stress about the increase in workload

It sounds easier said than done, right? Having to do more work can be scary because it means more stress and less fun. You might be rethinking how ready you are. However, it is be doable!

Remember, the workload assigned in high school is designed for your age group, so everyone else will be having the same struggles (whether they admit it or not). Think back to when you were in elementary school when you were so worried about going to the next grade – well this is the same!

Well, good news, you made it! This year will be very similar to the past few years. You might be thinking it’s going to be impossible, but all of the sudden you’ll be heading to 10th grade and realizing you made it through!

      2. Be prepared for your friends to switch around – it’s natural!

One of the worst feelings can be losing a friend. Whether that be abruptly or slowly, it hurts all the same. But remember, you’re growing up and finding yourself, which sometimes means outgrowing certain friends. Your personalities might have matched in elementary or middle school, but people change over time, which is totally normal.

People never stay the same their whole lives, especially as they mature. Although this might be tough at first, you will meet other people later on who you might get along great with. With this in mind, be open to creating friendships with all different types of people! Just because you have different hobbies, doesn’t mean your personalities won’t go great together!

       3. Don’t be afraid to say no – or yes!

Given the increased workload in high school, you’re now at the age when, “my mom said I have to stay home and study,” is the best excuse for saying no to an invitation.

High school can be hard, especially when your friends start partaking in activities you may or may not want to join in on. If you don’t want to do those same things and don’t feel comfortable telling people that, there’s nothing wrong with slowly distancing yourself.

Moreover, growing up comes with freedom, and if you feel comfortable with something and you know you won’t be doing anything wrong, then don’t feel guilty about it.

      4. Learn to cope with jealousy

As you grow up, you might encounter more complex or difficult social situations than you did before. Maybe your two closest friends are having a sleepover without you, or the friend group you thought you were a part of is having a group function without you. Maybe you can’t afford the new store everyone is shopping at, or you’re the only one of your friends without a boyfriend or girlfriend, so you miss out on the double dates.

Dealing with jealousy in high school is inevitable. Some people you know may leave you feeling genuinely left out, but if you feel comfortable mentioning it to them, then go ahead. It’s important to remember that these things will happen now and then throughout your life, and you might even make someone feel like this without realizing it!

Try to keep in mind that if you’re comfortable with yourself, jealousy doesn’t sting as badly. Also, if someone is purposefully leaving you out, they are clearly dealing with their own insecurities, which has nothing to do with you.

What if people left you out but not purposefully? Feeling like no one even thought of you can sometimes hurt even worse. In cases like these, those people clearly aren’t your real friends, but that’s okay. Be happy with people you click with, and it’ll feel so much better than feeling left out by the “popular” crew.

        5. Join those clubs

During my freshman year of high school, I moved to a new city to attend a new school. Being in a new setting without knowing anyone on the first day of school was possibly one of the most nerve wracking experiences of my life. I can still feel the crippling anxiety I felt as I got out of the car.

I sat by someone who looked nice and tried to start conversation by asking, “what homeroom do you have?” After the conversation picked up, I realized it wasn’t so bad. Over the next month, I joined every club my schedule would allow, and that’s how I met my people!

Clubs are the best way to find friends with similar interests as you. Plus, they look great to colleges – a win-win! I cannot recommend anything as much as getting involved. As long as you don’t overwhelm yourself, you won’t regret it!

Here’s a cute book about transitioning into freshman year! And don’t forget to check out Girl Spring’s advice on freshman year tips!

Affirmation Wednesday

GirlSpring’s Affirmation Wednesday is a weekly series that shares uplifting affirmations written by teen girls, for teen girls. These affirmations were created by girls who participated in the Girls at the Center Program, which was supported by a grant from the Women’s Foundation of Alabama in 2022 and 2024. Each Wednesday, a new affirmation is posted to help others feel seen, encouraged, and motivated to take on the week with confidence.

What makes it special is that the affirmations come straight from real girls who’ve been through it, sharing honest, heartfelt words that inspire others to keep going. It’s all about building a positive space where girls support each other, one powerful affirmation at a time

  1. Be the best version of you.
  2. You can do hard things.
  3. Listen to your heart.
  4. I am the head and not the tail. I’m above and not beneath. I’m the lender and not the borrower.
  5. I will treat myself with the same kindness I show others.
  6. Be yourself to the right people love you.
  7. People are proud of you.
  8. You will make the best out of life.
  9. Keep fighting. You will get there.
  10. You are success.

Summer is FINALLY here! If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent the last few months awaiting warmer air, natural hair, and general fun. I love the idea of summer and I certainly love the thought of being out of school, but every year when it finally arrives, I almost struggle to enjoy it. It can be hard to put on a swimsuit and go to the beach, it can be exhausting to walk or exercise in 90 degree heat, and it can feel lonely as several of your friends go away to camp or jet off on a luxurious vacation. With that said, if these feelings resonate with you, you are not alone and you do not have to let them dictate your time off! There are ways to manage yourself, your schedule, and your emotions if you care enough to do it.

Below, I have compiled a list of remedies to ease certain feelings and to ensure you have a HAPPY and HEALTHY summer!

Feeling insecure?

Feeling insecure is 100% normal, especially during the summer. Whether it revolves around your body, your lack of “exciting” events, or something else, it is important to practice self love during the summer. Confidence comes from how you feel, not how you look!

  • Get offline, go outside!

We are often our own biggest critics, and often in today’s world our self critiques are triggered by social media. People have told me this before and I have rejected the hypothesis, but the more I grow and learn I have found that it is certainly more true than most of us would like to admit. Instead of comparing yourself to people online, drop your phone and partake in activities that make you FEEL good!

This could include putting on an outfit you feel good in and going on a walk, hike, or even to a local coffee shop. Especially during the beautiful summer weather, it is important to leave your house and breathe fresh air. Outside activities are a good way to ground yourself and are also a key to motivating your body and brain, making them both happy! When your body feels good and you have had time to enjoy life outside of your closed bedroom door and out from behind the screen, it is easier to enjoy the world around us. We also tend to focus less on our physical appearance when focused on the beauty we are surrounded by, making this a great activity for those insecure about their physical appearance.

  • Have a self care day

Having a self care day can be as big or as little of a deal as you want it to be… it is what you make it! If you’re feeling extravagant, buy some face masks, get your nails done, or treat yourself to your favorite snack. If you’d rather have a casual day at home, do your skincare, take a long shower, watch your favorite movie, and take time to journal about your thoughts. Showing up for yourself looks different for everyone, and it is important to make yourself a priority. By showing your body that you care about it, you will naturally feel rejuvenated and more inclined to tackle whatever comes your way! Additionally, if you feel like you’re having a “boring summer” this can be a way to spice things up and make for an interesting anecdote to tell your friends.

Summer is YOUR break and YOUR opportunity to relax! Don’t let other people (or yourself) take away from that.

Feeling lonely?

My family definitely likes to relax during the summer. I watch my friends go to exotic locations and ship my friends away to sleepaway camp for months at a time, and sometimes I feel like nobody is home to hang out with me! At the same time, sometimes my family goes out of town, and I want nothing more than to be at home with my friends participating in the fun things they’re doing that day. I also know people who feel like their friends “disappear” during the summer- so these situations can look different for everyone. It can be hard to find time to spend with others during the summer, but that doesn’t make it impossible.

  • Volunteering

Every summer, I volunteer with several organizations, and I often make friends doing so. Not only is this a great activity for high school girls who are looking to build their resumes or gain volunteer hours, but it is also a very rewarding activity. Personally, I have volunteered with organizations who work with the less fortunate, and I have been able to connect with both peers who have the same values as I do, and also with adults and those in my community who I get to serve and learn from. I’ve also volunteered at an educational center where I’ve made friends with similar interests to mine. This is a great way to meet people, learn about your community, and find a sense of purpose during the summer.

To start, look up “volunteer opportunities in (your city)”, and find events that interest you! Chances are, the people you volunteer with might be more similar to you than you think.

  • Spending time with Furry Friends

Do not undermine the power of a dog, cat, or animal in keeping you company! While it is understood that not everyone has a pet or animal near them and their family, they are great companions who will make you feel fulfilled and happy after spending time with them. For those who do have a pet, playing a game like fetch, going for a walk, or simply snuggling on the couch with your furry friend can be a great way to mend some lonely and sad feelings while also creating fun and memorable moments for you and your pet. If you do not have a pet, go to a local animal shelter and volunteer, walk neighborhood dogs, or even consider adopting a small pet. Even having lower maintenance animals like fish can be great ways to keep yourself company during the summer months.

It is also important to remember that it is okay to be by yourself! When spending time with ourselves, we often have the most important and impactful thoughts and moments, and we learn to understand ourselves better. We do not get a lot of time to be alone- so we should not be afraid to embrace it when we do!

Feeling lazy?

After a tiring school year, it can be hard to want to do anything. We all know that it is important to move our bodies and leave the house, but it can be so tempting to stay in bed all day! Getting out of the slump that comes with the end-of-year exhaustion can be tricky, but it is important to take care of yourself year round.

  • Plan an Adventure

Planning an “adventure” or event can be, once again, as big or small as you make it, but having something to look forward to and to do in general is a great way to remind yourself of the importance of leaving the house. You can plan to hang out with your friend or plan an excursion for yourself. You can go on a hike or just watch a movie at the theater- there is such versatility that this “activity” can be fun for anyone or any group. If you are struggling with going outside, I’d suggest doing something outdoors like swimming or walking. Most importantly though, by planning fun activities you have a reason to go out, do something fun, and enjoy summer to its fullest extent!

  • Set Goals

Once again, this can and will look different for different people. Sometimes in the summer, I feel lazy and tired from the school year and do not have any interest in doing my summer reading. Sometimes, I just want to scroll on my phone instead of going for a walk or playing with my dog. While you may find these relatable, you may also struggle to get other things done during the summer. One of my favorite ways to ensure that I am getting both school work and personal needs met is by setting goals for myself. That could mean making a point to go outside and exercise 2 times a day, it could mean setting a goal to eat out only once a week, or it could be whatever personal goals you have in mind (those are certainly some of mine)!

Sometimes, I also set goals to work on with my friends. For example, some of my friends and I agree to read 60 pages of our books a week to keep us on track with our summer work. It is great to set goals with other people because they can motivate you and hold you accountable – but you can also be disciplined and work on personal goals independently. To start, set two or three goals and see if you can reach them each day for a week. Once you start, you won’t want to stop!

It is OKAY and actually important to be lazy and relax- balancing laziness, rest, and activities that are good for your mental and physical health is what’s important.

The birds are singing. The sun is shining. Rainbows are covering the skies, because it is that magical time of year. Not Christmas. Oh no, this is a time of year that is much better than Christmas. It has no homework, no tests, and no classes. That’s right, everybody, IT’S SUMMERTIME!

Summertime is the best time because students get their freedom back! They are freed from the dreaded eight-period day. All students dream and fantasize about what they will accomplish over the summer. The skills they will develop. The activities they will partake in.

But let us all be real with each other. Students create these grand plans in their heads, and they rarely turn out as expected. Learning how to play the guitar turns into binge-watching your favorite TV show…again. Finishing all your summer work early turns into you doing all of it two days before school starts. We all know this struggle. We try to be productive, and it never works out well.

But worry not! Here are a few tips I think will help have a fun productive summer!

 Create a schedule

I know this is advice that everyone gives but do not just make a strict schedule. Make a schedule that is flexible and achievable. Do not push yourself to unattainable goals. Make sure the schedule you make flows throughout the day and isn’t blocky. Also, it is okay to stray from the schedule if you have other plans, the schedule is only for days when you have no plans and don’t want to waste the day.

Prioritize activities you like.

Do not try to jump into a multitude of new activities that you have never tried before. With most of them, you will get burnt out and you will not do them. Instead of doing a bunch of new activities, focus on a few skills that you know you like and work towards improving them. If you like to write, write a short story. If you like to play basketball, work on a certain trick shot. Just make sure whatever you are doing to keep you occupied is also entertaining you.

Give yourself time to relax.

I know this article is about being productive, but if you are productive all the time, you will quickly become burnt out. Give yourself time every day, like an hour or two, to relax and watch some TV. Doing this will make sure that your days do not turn stressful and that you can still enjoy your summer. It will also make sure you are not spending all day watching TV, just a predetermined set time.

Hang out with friends

Do not let your summer life become mundane! Enjoy time with your friends and think of activities you could do together. Planning events with friends can give you something to look forward to in the summer so you do not become bored. Also, hanging out with friends can give you great memories of the summer and you will cherish them for a long time.

I know students all over are so excited for summer and I am right alongside them. Summer is the best part of a student’s year and I hope these tips will help you make the most of yours.
