A couple of weekends ago, I sat down and talked with my mom specifically about her job. A while back, I started a Women in Business Interview Series, and this year, I decided to kickstart it with one of the best in the game I know! No bias here!

Who is Kari Wilbanks?

My mom, Kari Wilbanks, runs her own interior design firm and has for seventeen years. She is a designer that focuses mainly on new construction for homes. She earned her degree at the University of Alabama, but it was not the route she thought she was going when starting her college education. This has been very reassuring in my own college search to know that things do change, and it is okay to find your passions later on! Ultimately, she landed on interior design because it was the best combination of some of the things she loved: being creative, working with others, and process thinking. As a kid, finding new designs, whether it was just around her room or rearranging her mother’s things, was never uncommon for Wilbanks, and she credits this time to being steps that lead her to interior design for a living.

Starting Kari Wilbanks Interior Design!

For the first seven years as an interior designer after internships here in Birmingham, Wilbanks was faced with a new challenge because of her husband’s relocation to Tampa. Fortunately, she was encouraged by those around her to take a leap of faith. Kari Wilbanks Interior Design was officially open for business!

While she enjoys being her own boss, Wilbanks recognizes that it is not the strategy for everyone. She loves the flexibility that managing yourself provides, especially when my sister and I were younger, it was very helpful to accommodate our schedules. When opening your own business, Wilbanks says it is very important to be a self-motivator. Being able to hold yourself accountable and encouraged to work is the key to success.

At the beginning of a new business, the motivation is necessary because of additional work such as accounting that may not be able to be hired so soon. To those looking into entrepreneurship, Wilbanks notes to “not listen” to the fears that people may project onto you. She says to stay confident in your work, believe you can always get it done, and know that you can do a good job. Your work is solely yours so believing in your abilities is the first step towards being a successful entrepreneur.

Wilbanks’ Advice on Entrepreneurship!

Although confidence in yourself is necessary, Wilbanks advises to never discount the lessons that others can teach you. She suggests finding a role model in your field that inspires you to be just as successful and provide a “footprint” for your work. Interning for interior design really puts into perspective the detail that the job revolves around. She says real-world experience shows the true nitty-gritty of the design field, especially if you are interested in the job’s route that deals with everyone else like builders, contractors, etc (what my mom does).

Yes, Wilbanks agrees, interior design is fun, but she wants to make clear there is so much more to it than that. Wilbanks uses the analytical side directly with her creative mind in her work. Something many people do not realize is the large amounts of math involved in interior designing. There are many numbers to account for that will ultimately determine the beauty of your work and satisfaction of clients.

Why Wilbanks’ Is An Inspiration!

By satisfying clients, Wilbanks finds a sense of empowerment. She is able to listen and deliver her clients wishes while knowing they trust her to perfectly execute something they want to spend the rest of their lives in. To Wilbanks, interior design is a collaboration. She strives to find the best fit for her clients while implementing her own expertise to make a home they truly love. In order to stand out in her field, Wilbanks knows authenticity is of utmost importance. She does not believe this is limited to just interior design; authenticity allows a connection to those you are working with and the best end result for all.

I have felt so lucky to grow up with a mom who truly exemplifies these traits. She has taught my sister and I the same qualities that she applies to her job: staying confident in yourself and learning from others. Although I do not wish to follow in her footsteps, I truly admire my mom’s dedication to her job that has not faltered throughout my life. Remember that your passion may not be apparent at first, but it will come in time and self motivation will follow! IF you have any more questions, feel free to reach out to me, and I (or my mom) can answer!

Reading is an essential part of life. Without reading, society loses life lessons, and doesn’t learn to enjoy stories. The world loses some of its beauty, and people lose empathy. It is imperative that children find a love of reading at an early age, however it is becoming increasingly difficult for books to compete against television and video games. If you’re looking for quality book recommendations for young readers, you came to the right place.

To cultivate a child’s interest, you must find a book that is entertaining, imaginative, and educational. When I say educational, I do not mean that the book teaches a child about the history of math. A book needs to teach a child about how to deal with loss, how to make lasting friendships, and how to have courage in hard times. Children will have plenty of time to learn how to do taxes and how to boost their college application, but while they are kids they should be able to read about fun adventures filled with love and kindness. They should not just be surrounded by mind numbing and shallow videos. Since it is so important for children to create an interest in reading, here are five book recommendations for young readers series that can help children venture into the world of the written word.

The Chronicles of Narnia By: C.S. Lewis

Probably one of the most famous book series in the world, The Chronicles of Narnia has caused many children to love reading. Set in the magical and beautiful world of Narnia, the story focuses on the importance of family and hope. It has lovable characters that many people can see themselves in, a wonderful plot, and it is easy for young readers to understand.

Mr. Lemoncello’s Library By: Chris Grabenstein

This book series is filled with quirky and creative plotlines that follow a group of friends as they try to decipher riddles set before them by a wacky billionaire. The book is filled with puzzles and riddles not just for the characters but for the audience as well. Not only is it entertaining to read and easy to understand, it teaches its reader about how to create long lasting friendships. Mr. Lemoncello’s Library is an exciting and fun read for any kid that loves a good challenge.

The Land of Stories By: Chris Colfer

This story follows a set of twins as they travel through a land filled with fairy tales. The book centralizes on the importance of family and finding out who you are. The books can be enjoyable for everyone and can add depth to fairy tales that all children will recognize. It is a comedic, loveable story that all children would love to read.

Kingdom Keepers By: Ridley Pearson

The Kingdom Keepers book series is an adventure-filled and suspenseful story that will have many children on the edge of their seats. Set in the Disney World Parks, the main characters have to protect magic from classic Disney villains. This series teaches children about how to balance your responsibilities and how to protect your friends. Filled with heart-warming and devastating scenes, Kingdom Keepers is a great series for children to fall in love with.

Harry Potter By: J.K. Rowling

Another famous book series, Harry Potter has had a massive impact on millions of individuals world wide for good reason. Harry Potter is not afraid to confront the hard topics in life but rather is able to deal with them in a delicate manner. Filled with adventure, grief, friendships, love, and of course magic, this book series can awaken a child to the beautiful world of reading.

There are a million other book series that can cause a child to love literature. However the books I have mentioned have a special place in my heart. Many of these books have grown my love of reading and I hope that they can help another to fall in love as well. I hope you enjoyed these book recommendations for young readers.

Happy Reading!

The Years Ahead: A Poem

2025

That’s a year that I used to be excited for.

Now after the election,

I’m scared out of my mind.

Not just for myself,

But for the people that I’m friends with.

Black people,

Women,

Immigrants,

Gay people,

Trans people,

Poor people,

Heck, even men!

Literally everyone except the people in power,

Because this doesn’t affect them.

why?

2026

That’s the year that my brother graduates,

Then, I’ll have one less shoulder to lean on.

One less person to fight and argue with.

One less person to laugh and spend time with.

One less person that cares.

I’ll lose another person close to me.

Then there’s an empty bedroom.

Then, there’s only two kids left.

Then, another rift is created.

Then, I’ll be 16.

I’ll miss him,

But will he miss me?

2027

That’s the year that my step-brother graduates.

Then, I’ll have one less shoulder to lean on.

Just myself.

One less person to fight and argue with.

Just myself.

One less person to laugh and spend time with.

Just myself.

One less person that cares.

Just myself.

I’ll lose another person close to me.

Then there’s another empty bedroom.

Then, there’s only one kid left.

Then, another rift is created.

Then, I’ll be 17.

I’ll miss him, even though we fought,

Will he miss me?

2028

That’s the year that I graduate.

Me, the final child.

Then, there’s just my parents.

One less person to fight and argue with.

One less person to laugh and spend time with.

One less person that cares.

They’ll lose another person close to them.

Then, there’s another empty bedroom.

Then, there’s no kids left.

Then, a rift is healed.

Then, I’ll be 18,

An adult.

I’ll miss them.

I’ll miss my childhood,

Regretting wanting to grow up faster.

But I KNOW that they will miss me.

2029

That’s the year I’ll be a freshman in college.

Another election has passed.

Hopefully, it went better than the last one.

I see my family over breaks and for holidays.

There’s a new air when we meet,

A nostalgic feeling.

We have grown up,

We are still the same people,

Just more mature.

We laugh about the past.

Complain about college.

We are together again,

And long for the time to spend together again.

We will see each other again.

Finding the perfect gift for parents can often feel overwhelming, especially when trying to stay within a budget. While thoughtful gestures typically come with a price tag, there are numerous low-cost gift ideas for parents that can show appreciation without breaking the bank. Creativity and personalization often matter more than cost, making these gifts memorable and meaningful.

Consider practical gifts that cater to their interests and routines. Simple items such as handmade coupons for chores, a favorite homemade treat, or a personalized photo frame can add a special touch. Each gift can reflect a shared moment or a unique aspect of their lives, emphasizing the thoughtfulness behind it.

Additionally, experiences can be valuable gifts. A picnic at a local park or a movie night at home can create lasting memories without significant expense. It’s the experiences and the moments spent together that often bring families closer.

Budget-Friendly Gift Ideas

Finding budget-friendly gifts for parents can be fulfilling and meaningful. Thoughtful ideas can show appreciation without straining finances. Here are some economically viable options that focus on personal touch, experiences, and practical use.

DIY Gifts

Creating a DIY gift adds a personal touch that store-bought items cannot match. Parents often cherish handmade items more due to the effort and thought invested.

  • Photo Album: Compile family photos into an album or scrapbook. This nostalgic gift can spark cherished memories.
  • Homemade Treats: Bake cookies or prepare a jar of homemade jam. Presenting these in decorative packaging adds a festive touch.
  • Customized Coupons: Design coupons for services such as a home-cooked meal, errands, or a day out. It’s a way to offer time and effort rather than money.

These ideas allow for creativity while being considerate of a limited budget.

Experiential Gifts

Experiences can be more memorable than material items. Gifting experiences can create lasting memories without a large expenditure.

  • Nature Walks: Plan a day at a local park or nature reserve. Pack a picnic to enjoy together.
  • Local Events: Look for free or low-cost community events like concerts, art fairs, or theater performances. Sharing these experiences can foster closeness.
  • Game Night: Host a game night at home with board games or trivia. Prepare snacks and beverages for a fun, relaxing evening.

These options emphasize quality time spent together rather than physical gifts.

Practical & Useful Presents

Gifts that serve a purpose can be appreciated more than decorative items. Practical gifts provide value in daily life.

  • Kitchen Gadgets: Useful tools like a high-quality vegetable peeler or a spice holder can make cooking easier.
  • Gardening Supplies: If they enjoy gardening, consider items like seeds, gloves, or tools. These gifts encourage hobbies and outdoor activities.
  • Personal Care Items: Quality lotions or custom-made soaps can promote relaxation and self-care. You can also go for natural oils that are known for nourishing hair and skin (see this one, for example).

Selecting practical gifts shows consideration for their daily needs, adding to the gift’s value.

Thoughtful Touches

Small gestures can have a significant impact when it comes to gift-giving. Unique, personalized gifts show care and consideration that parents appreciate. Here are a few ideas that combine creativity and sentiment.

Personalized Items

Creating personalized gifts allows for a unique touch that resonates deeply. Options include custom-made items like mugs, keychains, or photo frames featuring family portraits or meaningful quotes. Consider getting an inexpensive frame from the dollar store and printing a poem you’ve written or an artwork you created. Parents love things like this!

Engraved items such as jewelry or keepsakes can capture special dates or initials. Many online platforms offer user-friendly services for customization. The result is a gift that feels personal and thoughtfully crafted.

These gifts not only enhance aesthetic appeal but also carry emotional value. Parents cherish these tangible reminders of love and connection.

Memory Books and Albums

Memory books and albums are an excellent way to compile treasured moments. Parents appreciate curated collections of photos and mementos highlighting family milestones.

Creating a digital photo book through services like Shutterfly or Snapfish allows for easy organization and layout design. Alternatively, handmade scrapbooks offer a personal touch, filled with handwritten notes and decorative elements.

In addition to pictures, including ticket stubs, letters, or small keepsakes enhances the nostalgia factor. These collections serve as a beautiful way for parents to reminisce and cherish past experiences.

Subscription Services

Subscription services are practical yet thoughtful gifts that can bring joy throughout the year. They can cater to a variety of interests, whether parents prefer gourmet food, books, or streaming services.

For instance, a monthly subscription box for coffee lovers or a book club membership can enhance daily routines. These services provide ongoing enjoyment and introduce elements of surprise and discovery.

Choosing a subscription that aligns with their hobbies reflects thoughtfulness. Parents will appreciate the continuous reminder of the giver’s consideration as they receive new items each month.

It’s the thought that counts

This isn’t always true, but with your parents it is. They would much rather spend time with you and know that you care about them than any gift you can buy. If you really want to buy something though, the tips above should help!

Christmastime is always the best time of the year. There’s lights on the trees, songs being sung, and cookies being made for Santa. My family and I love Christmas, but more importantly, we love our Christmas traditions. We have many; my sister and I always open our Christmas gifts from each other on Christmas Eve. I love all of our Christmas traditions, but there is one that I love more than anything: Alabama Theater.

Alabama Theater

Every year for a while now, my family goes to the Alabama Theater to watch a Christmas movie. The first time we ever did this was when we went and watched White Christmas, and it was magical. At the theater, the show begins with trivia about the movie. When the movie is about to start, an organ comes out from under the stage and starts to play Christmas music.

They will even play Christmas carols for people in the audience to sing along to!  It truly feels magical in that theater when the movie begins playing because of how beautiful the rooms are. The theater looks like it’s right out of a movie scene.

Christmas Memories

I remember one particular night when my family decided that we wanted to see Christmas Vacation. We were so excited. Then we started to see people in weird costumes enter the theater. The movie started and my mother and sister were horrified the whole time while watching the movie! It was the funniest thing I ever saw!

I love this tradition so much because it helps me make lasting memories with my family, and it helps me understand that I should appreciate my time with them. At the end of the day, Christmastime is about family and making memories, and I am so grateful that the Alabama Theater helps me do this each year.

As the scent of pine fills the air and the festive lights begin to twinkle, everything instantly starts to feel like Christmas. The scent of freshly baked cookies, the warmth of hands clasped around steaming mugs of cocoa, and the joyful burst of laughter from living rooms all paint the picture of pure holiday joy. It’s a season of family and friends coming together, indulging in beloved traditions of unfolding old stories, exchanging many a thoughtful gift following fun Secret Santa rules, and making merry.

Gift exchanges are the magical highlight of the holiday season! The thrill of unwrapping something specially chosen for you makes the moment even more special. Whether it’s a beautifully embroidered scarf, an exclusive subscription to a book club, or a cozy winter getaway, each gift seamlessly fits into your life, adding a layer of holiday charm to each day.

While receiving gifts from your loved ones is always heartwarming, the excitement can fade away quickly when you receive something you wouldn’t choose for yourself or already own. We’ve all been there—receiving a meaningful gift that, despite the love behind it, just doesn’t quite excite you.

Instead of saying, “Wow, I love it,” you just try to escape the situation with vague smiles and courtesy thank yous.

Christmas Shop With Ease

While gift exchange is a delightful tradition, gift shopping is definitely not. From the excitement of picking a unique treasure to finding something that actually matches your personality, gift hunting is daunting for your loved ones.

What if you could share your dreamy wish list with your loved ones and make gift-hunting a fun adventure for them? With platforms like MyRegistry, you can easily create your dreamy holiday gift list and share it with your friends and family. Whether you’re hosting a Secret Santa exchange or a festive white elephant party, their Secret Santa Generator can match you with the perfect gifter and ensure you get something special.

Therefore, this holiday season, let’s help you craft your dreamy holiday gift list to make it even more special. Your wish list won’t only guide your loved ones toward perfect gifts but also ensure you receive gifts full of unforgettable memories!

Crafting a Thoughtful Gift List that Makes Every Gift a Delightful Surprise

  • Gifts that Mirror Your Personality

A truly meaningful gift feels like an extension of you! They make you feel cherished and add joy to your life for more than one holiday season. Adding items that seamlessly fit into your personality will make a perfect gift choice for your wish list. Whether it’s fitness equipment for your health journey, a gratitude journal for wellness, or a set of handcrafted knives for culinary adventures, they all will allow you to pursue your passions. Adding such items invites your loved ones to give you something that you truly desire and will appreciate.

  • Strengthening Bonds with Presents

More than gifts, it’s the memories that we cherish. Why not add items to your gift list that’ll allow you to collect beautiful memories and strengthen your bond with your loved ones? Whether it’s engraved wine glasses to celebrate special occasions, board games to enjoy during family get-togethers, or hobby kits like painting sets, knitting kits, or gardening supplies to have fun with your family, adding such items will help you make lots of cherished memories. These gifts become a symbol of love and togetherness and make every holiday moment feel extraordinary.

  • Practical Gifts for Convenience

The holiday season reminds us of the simple joys of life! Whether it’s spending time with your loved ones, sharing heartfelt anecdotes, or indulging in traditional home-cooked food, it all reminds us of what truly matters: love and the warmth of being together. Why not add items to your holiday gift list that won’t just bring joy to your everyday rituals but will also remind you of the people who make your life special? You can go for everyday, practical essentials like ergonomic chairs for your home office, cozy weighted blankets for chilly winter, or a set of artisanal candles to fill your home with love. Every time you use these items, you’ll think of the love and care your loved ones infuse into your life.

  • Local Treasures: Gifts that Stand Out

Just as unique as you are, so should be the gifts you receive! Local boutiques and artisans pour all their love into creating one-of-a-kind treasures that perfectly match your personality and charm. By including gifts like a hand-stitched leather journal, a collection of artisanal teas, or a handwoven blanket, you receive something as unique as you while supporting small businesses. Adding local items to your gift list not only makes your presents special and meaningful but also spreads delight across your loved ones to these creators.

  • Two Gifts in One: Experiences and Lasting Memories

While material gifts often end up gathering dust, experiential gifts give you memories that forever remain etched in your heart and linger long after the season ends. Imagine walking around the streets of Japan during the scenic cherry blossom, the calmness you feel within you after a cozy weekend spa retreat, or the shared moments of teary-eyed laughter after a family photography session. This is the magic experiential gifts weave into your life. Whether it’s a trip to the continent, a sumptuous retreat, or a sweet photo session with family, they go way beyond the moment of receiving the tickets or passes.

Final Thoughts

The holidays are the time to celebrate love, share laughter, cherish bonds, and create lasting memories with meaningful gifts. By sharing your dream holiday gift list with your loved ones, you can add a layer of magic to the celebrations and make them far more memorable. Your gift list ensures you receive items that’ll delight you long after the holiday season and give your loved ones a sneak peek into what your heart truly desires. Here’s to an unforgettable holiday season filled with love, laughter, and gifts that truly warm your heart!

Colors of Change by Charlotte Self, illustrates the poem. Brightly colored fall leaves

Colors of Change

Autumn leaves change fast

Almost too fast to see them

Then away they go

Some friends are these leaves

They are there then they are gone

It happens sometimes

It’s a part of life

It’s a part of growing up

It’s a normal thing

But like autumn leaves

New friendships will come again

Bringing new color

Now that it’s fall, consider this question. What is your favorite movie or show to watch to get you into the spirit of the season? Many would probably answer Gilmore Girls, so I am here today to tell you if it’s really worth watching!

Gilmore Girls is a 2000’s television series starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. The two actors take on the role of mother and daughter. This show is filled with twists and turns and drama that will keep you hooked. The plot outlines a young mother from a high-class family, running away and adopting a simpler and quieter life.  She raises her daughter by herself and builds a community of her own. The daughter, Rory, is smart and driven with a goal to one day attend Harvard University. But throughout the show, we see her goals somewhat shift.

I first started watching Gilmore Girls almost 3 years ago. To this day, every time fall rolls around, I know that it’s time to rewatch! Now, it is important to keep in mind that this show can be watched year round, but it has a special feeling when you watch it around fall. From meddling grandparents to small town life, this show has it all. It may be hard for some to stay engaged with all seven seasons of the show. Personally, I was also struggling to get to the end. However, after watching the whole show, I knew that I would rewatch it for years to come. So now, three years later I still have the same opinion.

Usually, I bundle up on the couch with a hot cup of coffee and just let the show play, and no matter how many times I watch it, I always see something new or different. So I recommend that everybody watch the show. It may not be educational, but it is a great way to relax and have a laugh!

Math is commonly (unjustly) declared the “hardest” subject, but I think physics is worse. Since math was my best subject, I thought physics was going to be alright until the free body diagrams got confusing and static friction made no sense. There was a test tomorrow, and nothing in the unit made sense. After countless hours of staring at the textbook with no avail, I turned to my mom for help.

She interrogated me about a free body diagram. I knew that gravity pointed down, but that was about it. Was the normal force up or perpendicular to the ramp? Where did friction point? Where even was the block moving?

Noticing my confusion, she sighed and facepalmed. She loved physics as a high schooler and expected the same from me. However, I had a shaky foundation from mindlessly memorizing facts from school. I needed to rebuild my understanding of physics.

I braced myself for a super long lecture about kinematics and forces, but she instead started discussing Richard Feynman. Feynman was one of the most prominent scientists in the 20th century and a pioneer in quantum electrodynamics. He had a brilliant mind, a dynamic personality, and a passion for teaching. In addition to being a Nobel Prize winning researcher, he also hosted the famed Feynman Lectures from teaching an introductory physics class at Caltech.

From an early age, Feynman was encouraged to observe and question. When he was young, he once saw a bird with his father. Neither he nor his father knew the name of the bird. His father explained that even if they knew the name of the bird in various languages, he wouldn’t know anything about the bird unless he observed it. Feynman was curious about the world he observed, and he used these observations to formulate his own thoughts about phenomena.

As an educator, Feynman was displeased with how many schools taught rote memorization instead of promoting exploration and true understanding. Feynman believed that nothing, not even physics, was certain, so there was always room for discovery and further learning. My mom agreed with many of his thoughts on education and hoped that I could take his advice to heart.

After I agreed to think for myself and take learning into my hands, my mom patiently explained the unfamiliar concepts. Normal force is perpendicular to a surface. The block moves if the external force is enough to overcome static friction. Kinetic friction points opposite to the direction of motion, but static friction can also propel things forward across the ground or keep my phone against the wall if I press on it.

Within the next hour, I was able to confidently solve and explain the example problems. I’m nowhere near Feynman or my mom in terms of expertise, but I think physics is making a lot more sense. The more I learn, the more I realize the connections between various concepts. I still think physics is less straightforward than math, but it is wonderful to think about how the universe comes together.
